About Our Project

South Central El Paso: Exploring El Paso's Old East Side is an ongoing digital history project of the Institute of Oral History (IOH) at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Our website tells the stories of the South Central barrio in El Paso, Texas, both contemporary and disappeared, through historical narratives, oral histories, and photographs. We are working in partnership with El Paso County and County Commissioner David Stout through their historical preservation project "Corazón, Historia, y Raices." In addition, we have a small grant from the Texas Historical Commission to help support our project.
